      Mahmoud Alhaji Othman

Meet "Mahmoud ", Paper Airplanes student from Aleppo.

"My name is Mahmoud AlHaji Othman, and I am from Aleppo, Syria. I studied Electrical Engineering and then Economics, but I was not able to complete my studies because of the war. I worked in the field of media and became active making documentaries to support the cause of those rebelling against dictatorship. I worked with many media agencies like Al Jazeera, Reuters, Channel 4, ZDF, and others.

I worked on and co-produced several documentaries, including "Children of Syria" for PBS, which recently won the Emmy International Award, directed by German director Marcel Mettelsiefen. I also worked on a movie called "Watany My Homeland" which is also nominated for an Oscar.

I did not know or care much about international awards when I started working in this field, as my main priority was to convey the truth and to help ease people’s suffering and to defend their rights to live freely, but I was thrilled to hear that the film won this great award and that I could achieve this.

I traveled to France in April 2017 to seek treatment for my young son Mudar who is suffering from a rare blood disease, but I am also very happy to be developing my English article-writing skills as a student in Paper Airplanes’ journalism course."
