Patrick Gaffey is one of our amazing tutors who has been volunteering with Paper Airplanes since 2021. He is originally from Ireland and is currently living in Boston, USA, as an exchange student. Patrick first heard about Paper Airplanes in 2020 while studying history and philosophy at the University of Glasgow. “I have always had a keen interest in learning and teaching languages, so when I learned about Paper Airplanes through Glasgow University's volunteer service, I immediately seized the opportunity,” Patrick says. That's when his journey with Paper Airplanes began.

Patrick adds, “I have had the privilege of teaching a diverse range of students, from absolute beginners to advanced learners, and this experience has enabled me to employ various teaching techniques,”
Volunteering with Paper Airplanes brought Patrick an unexpected surprise. He exclaims, “Throughout the sessions, I have gained a profound understanding of Syrian and Middle Eastern culture through my conversations with students. My students have diverse interests, and they have taught me a great deal about art, science, and history!”
He continues, “However, every journey has its challenges. Dealing with time differences has undoubtedly been my biggest obstacle. Finding a suitable time that works for both me and my students can be quite challenging, especially when I have students from different countries and time zones. But with dedication and some technical support, we always manage to find a mutually convenient time.”
Recognizing that students are the heart of his work, Patrick takes a moment to address them directly: “To all the students I have worked with, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for everything you have taught me and for the incredible experiences we have shared. Keep up the great work, and remember that Paper Airplanes is here to support you whenever you need assistance.”
Patrick has a message for prospective volunteers: “I highly recommend anyone who is interested in volunteering to get involved with Paper Airplanes. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience, meet new people, and the best part is that it doesn't require a significant time commitment.”
